Challenger

I was in first grade
Mrs. Hopkins’ class
sitting on the floor
legs criss crossed
chin resting in my hands
staring at the wheeled in tv
It was a big day
A big deal
The 80’s
Televised education
Space exploration
A great big mystery
out beyond the stars
The countdown commenced
The class fidgeted with excitement
The shuttle blasted off with
rumbles and shaking
With oohs aahs and applause
and then
It blasted apart in a ball of fire
We all sat stunned still
Eyes fixed to the screen
To the trails of smoke
My teacher rushed to shut it off
while looking concerned over at us
I’d like to say
I learned on that day how quickly
everything can end
How no plan is perfect
How life has no guarantees
About the complete fragility of the
human existence
But I was in first grade
Mrs. Hopkins’ class
A five year old on a carpet
A tv on a cart
watching a space shuttle become
fireworks
