Grieving & Pretending

For awhile I pretended
you were on vacation
On some island surrounded
by blue waters
Tanning on white
sand beaches
beneath a Caribbean sun
On that grey day
they lowered your casket
into the wet ground
I no longer needed to
pretend
because I knew without
a glimmer of
doubt
that’s where you were
